Diabetes levels are increasing rapidly throughout the world. The future, for both patients and healthcare services, is looking challenging. It is therefore a priority for researchers and scientists to provide as much information about means of preventing the disease as possible. One recent breakthrough, which will have an application in diabetes treatment, is the development of anti-obesity drugs.
Obesity, an incredibly common and constantly increasing problem in many nations, has been proven to directly influence the development of diabetes. Furthermore, the insulin required to treat the disease may further add weight to the patient. However, anti-obesity drugs in development may be able to combat both conditions simultaneously.
By reducing one’s weight, the risk of the disease is greatly diminished. Furthermore, for those patients who have already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, weight loss may help to manage the disease. Anti-obesity drugs include the incretin hormone.
Incretin mimetic directly mimics the effects that naturally-occurring bodily hormones produce: it controls cravings for food as well as helping to stabilise blood sugars. The drug, which may help in the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetics, may be available as a pill for prescription in the future.
