Diet, perceived by many as the single most important factor in controlling type 2 diabetes, was again supported as being of vital importance by a new study. Researchers from the University of California in Los Angeles published their conclusions in the online Journal of Applied Physiology.
The study found that changing to a simple diet and exercise routine could dramatically decrease your risk of developing diabetes and heart disorders… in only three weeks. When combined with appropriate exercise, three weeks of low-fat dieting was shown to reduce risks of both type 2 diabetes and the blossoming problem of metabolic syndrome (also known as pre-diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance and syndrome X).
Metabolic syndrome is an enormous worry for America and numerous other countries around the world. It is estimated that a significant proportion of people suffering from metabolic syndrome will go on to develop type 2 diabetes. In the future, this could lead to a huge burden on health-care services already struggling to cope with the diabetes pandemic. People suffering from metabolic syndrome typically have excessive fat and blood fat disorders.
The study group comprised 31 men aged in their forties to seventies. They were placed on a carefully structured low-fat diet, and conducted around an hour of aerobic exercise every day.
