Could a renowned and effective cancer treatment also be used as a way to control diabetes?
That could be the case, as diabetes patients in America undergo clinical trials to assess the effectiveness of the chemotherapy drug Rituximab. The drug is a cancer treatment approved for lymphoma.
An expert from the Miller School of Medicine, elaborating on how the drug might help to treat diabetes, said that: “What they do is target particular cells this particular drug targets “B” cells which are part of the immune system in the body and part of the cells that create the ongoing process that leads to type one diabetes.”
One patient undergoing trials said that: “I’m excited to do this and to help others and to help myself hopefully and just to see what happens.” The National Institutes of Health pay for the patient’s travel costs.
The study is taking place at several destinations across American, with the University of Miami being just one of them. The aim is for twelve sites to eventually be incorporated into the study. The results will be available within two years.
