American, until recently thought of as the global diabetes hotspot, now faces federal budget cuts of funding for the condition. The disease, now the fastest growing in the United States, should be the subject of major healthcare expenditure, due to the enormous levels of people with metabolic syndrome and pre-diabetes.
Diabetes is the only major US disease with a rising death rate, has surged by 22 per cent since 1990. Type 2 figures in the US have soared over 20 million. Federal research and treatment funding, unbelievably has been slashed by $1.2 billion and may fall even further next year. One expert, from the American Public Health Association reportedly said that “diabetes is clearly one of the most important threats facing us and its funding is decades behind other diseases.” Now, more than ever before, the need for funding is great.
Fighting diabetes is rooted in the fight against obesity, which is regarded as the leading cause of the disease. The cuts were reported in the New York Times, as federal health and budget spokesmen would not comment on the matter. Fighting obesity is structured around diet and exercise .
