Heart disease and diabetes connection revealed by study

A recent study conducted at leading US diabetes hub, the Joslin Diabetes Center, has highlighted the reasons why people suffering from type 2 diabetes run a greater risk of dying from heart attacks caused by reduced blood supply to the heart .
According to the healthcare research, diabetic people can sometimes develop blockages in heart vessels. This occurs when heart cells undergo VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), and manufacture new vascular endothelium. These are the cells that line blood vessels, and normally insulin will start the process. When people have insulin resistance, this process occurs less, and the risk of blockages are much greater.
Heart disease is a major complication of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and affects thousands of diabetics daily. Other complications of diabetes include neuropathy and the eventual possibility of amputation, kidney disease, and retinopathy – damage to the eyes caused by diabetes. Diabetes can account for one or all of these conditions, and many more.
