According to the diabetes news today, a man in Oklahoma has brought a legal case against diabetes drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline. In federal court, the man is claiming that diabetes drug Avandia gave him major heart problems that eventually required bypass surgery.
Avandia has faced significant controversy in the last year, when a journal article strongly linked it to increased risk of heart attack and death. The drug has been on the market since 1999, and was designed to help type 2 diabetics improve their blood sugar levels .
Los Angeles based attorney Roger Drake, whose company is representing the ma, reportedly commented: “We’re in the early stages of a national pharmaceutical litigatio, and it’s snowballing.” Drake reportedly said that thousands of Avandia-related lawsuits were on the cusp of being filed.
