According to reports from the global diabetes news, the UAE now has access to Byetta, a drug manufactured with an artificial version of Gila monster venom.
The lizard-spit drug, as it has been called in the past, aids diabetics to manage blood sugar levels . Gila monsters are large lizards that inhabit certain areas of the United states.
As a diabetic drug, byetta is popular and common, treating over 700,000 diabetics throughout the world. Byetta was co-developed by Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmaceutcials, and is now available in the UAE.
An endocrinologist at Al Zahra hospital, UAE, Dr. Zain Gulzar, reportedly commented: “Unlike most medications which cause weight gain, this drug mostly causes weight loss . Secondly, and most importantly, it is a glucose dependent drug, which means if a patient’s blood sugar is normal the drug won’t make the sugar level drop, preventing hypoglycaemia – a common problem with medication like insulin .”
