The American Senator Charles Schumer has gone on record to highlight the fact that even as serious disease rates decline, diabetes diagnosis has doubled in Southern states in under 15 years.
Speaking out at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, Sen. Schumer reportedly announced a series of self-sponsored bills that will aim to get federal government more actively involved in fighting diabetes, using both treatment and prevention.
Schumer said that diabetes statistics were frightening. He reportedly commented: “There’s a growing number of diabetes cases. They are sweeping across Elmira and the Twin Tiers area. It’s one of our greatest impending health crises. The number of people in this area and across the country has doubled since 1994.”
The new legislation will fight obesity amongst children and further promote healthy lifestyles for diabetes prevention.
