Major diabetes drug manufacturer Novo Nordisk A/S is looking to stem cell research to try and find a cure for diabetes . Novo, who are one of the world leaders in diabetes care, claimed this week that they would collaborate to develop a type 1 diabetes treatment program based on stem cells .
Novo will partner with biotech company Cellartis and Lund University in Denmark. Stem cell technology may be becoming increasingly more interesting to the pharmaceutical industry. Stem cells have in the past been ignored as controversial, with the research at too early a stage to draw big pharma attention.
The senior vice president for Diabetes Research at Novo Nordisk, Peter Kurtzhals, reportedly commented: “Finding a cure for diabetes is part of Novo Nordisk’s vision. Today’s agreement is an important first step in achieving our goal.”
