A recent study to be published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, young people with type 1 diabetes who have abnormal insulin resistance could face a greater risk of cardiovascular disease.
Type 1 diabetes often starts during childhood, and this type of diabetes is not usually linked with cardiovascular disease. In this research, the team measured levels of insulin sensitivity as well as heart, blood and exercise function amongst 12 adolescents.
Lead author Kristen Nadeau of the University of Colorado, Denver, reportedly commented: “Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death in adults with diabetes, but until now, little was known about the effects of type 1 diabetes on cardiovascular health in youth. Our data suggests that while youth with type 1 diabetes may not present conditions typical of insulin resistance, such as obesity, insulin resistance is present and may affect long-term cardiovascular outcomes in this population.”
