A new wi-fi management system based on mobile technology for insulin infusion for patients with type 1 diabetes is to be clinical trialled. The system, devised by healthcare firm Cellnovo, will be tried out across the UK on 100 children and adults with type 1 diabetes, allowing them to monitor and manage their diabetes and relay information about their condition to a doctor.
The technology comprises an insulin pump that is connected wirelessly to an app-based handset, allowing patients to monitor blood glucose levels, as well offering an activity monitor and the ability to transmit data to a web-based clinical management system.
John Pickup from King’s College London School of Medicine, who is leading the trial, commented “This clinical trial is not just the world’s first with a mobile-connected insulin infusion system, it is also the first clinical trial in which the care team and patients can simultaneously observe and evaluate patient data in real time, anywhere in the world.”
William F McKeo, chief executive of Cellnovo, said “The launch of the Cellnovo system marks a new era in medicine where mobile connectivity is routinely embedded in medical devices.”
Most people with type 1 diabetes in the UK use multiple daily injections to control their condition, while pump technology is much more common in the rest of Europe and the US.
