Bernstein was considered a pioneer of type 1 diabetes

Dr. Richard K. Bernstein – a pioneer in diabetes care and example for countless individuals living with type 1 diabetes – passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025, at the age of 90.

His life’s journey transformed the landscape of diabetes management and inspired a global community to pursue better health through informed self-care.

Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 12 in 1946, Dr. Bernstein experienced firsthand the limitations of the standard treatments of his time.

By the late 1960s, he was grappling with severe complications, despite diligently following medical advice.

Determined to change his trajectory, he acquired a blood glucose meter then available only to medical professionals and began meticulously monitoring his blood sugar levels.

Through this self-experimentation, he discovered that a low-carbohydrate diet, combined with precise insulin dosing, could stabilise his blood glucose and reverse many of his complications.

From engineer to endocrinologist

Initially trained as an engineer, Dr. Bernstein faced resistance from the medical community when he attempted to share his findings. Undeterred, he enrolled in medical school at the age of 45, earning his degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

He dedicated his subsequent medical career to treating diabetes, establishing a practice in Mamaroneck, New York, where he advocated for tight blood sugar control and individualised patient care.

A legacy of empowerment and education

Dr. Bernstein authored several influential books, including the best-selling “Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution,” which provided comprehensive guidance on achieving normal blood sugars.

His “Diabetes University” video series further extended his reach, offering accessible education to a global audience.

His approach, once considered unconventional, has since influenced mainstream diabetes care, with organisations like the American Diabetes Association acknowledging the benefits of low-carbohydrate diets.

Remembered by the community

The diabetes community has expressed profound gratitude for Dr. Bernstein’s contributions.

One individual shared, “Because of his dedication and life’s work, I’ve been able to maintain an HbA1c of 5.0% and live with normal blood sugars.

I’m forever grateful.”  Another recounted, “Starting Bernstein I realised I didn’t even know what normal blood sugar all the time felt like! It was amazing.”

A lasting impact

Dr. Bernstein’s unwavering commitment to patient empowerment and evidence-based care has left an indelible mark on diabetes management.

His legacy continues to inspire individuals worldwide to take control of their health and strive for optimal wellbeing.
