A newly developed weight loss pill can offer the same benefits as Ozempic but without the potentially harmful side effects of the jab, a British academic has claimed.
Dr Madusha Peiris has found that Elcella capsules can help people lose nearly 20% of their body weight without experiencing the negative side effects that come from weight loss jabs, such as nausea.
Made up of flaxseed oil, coconut oil and MCT oil, the Elcella pills are taken twice a day and trigger the release of glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1, and peptide YY, making people feel full for longer.
Dr Peiris said: “The tragedy of obesity is that you lose much of your ability to tell when you’re full.

“We found a combination of nutrients trigger hormones that control appetite, so you eat less and lose weight. Our discovery means we have a new way to help people get healthy again.”
Currently, only people involved in a controlled clinical trial are eligible to use Elcella capsules as a way to lose weight.
Prior research published in 2022 has found that flaxseed oil is associated with weight loss among people with obesity because it is a rich source of alpha-linolenic acid and triggers a decrease in hunger levels.
Previous experiments have found that Ozempic and Wegovy users tend to lose around 15% of their bodyweight, while Mounjaro users shed roughly 20% or more.
Since the start of 2023, more than 600 fake weight loss injection pens have been seized by health officials. According to doctors, fake jabs have caused people to suffer life-threatening seizures.
Dr Peiris, founder of Elcella, said: “We differ from weight-loss drugs in that Elcella releases your own naturally occurring, appetite-reducing hormones rather than replacing them with synthetic hormones. Because it releases a natural process, we’ve not seen any side effects in three clinical trials.
“Weight-loss drugs can cause nausea, insomnia and high blood pressure — among other unpleasant side effects. It’s also given via a twice-daily pill, whereas weight-loss drugs are usually injected.”

Waiting lists for weight loss jabs via the NHS are long, forcing most people to pay privately for the drugs.
Dr Peiris has revealed that Elcella capsules will be 50% cheaper than weight loss drugs currently on the market.
Joint researcher Dr Rubina Aktar said: “With the soaring popularity of drugs like Ozempic, the market is ripe for disruption.
“Those drugs have proved their efficacy, but there’s never been a natural alternative like Elcella that works with the body’s natural processes.”
Dr Aktar concluded: “Our product is an important new strategy that will help tackle the growing global crisis of obesity and alleviate pressure on the NHS.”
