Weekly semaglutide can help people living with type 1 diabetes “reach their blood sugar and weight goals”, new research has shown.

Researchers have discovered that adults with type 1 diabetes who use automated insulin delivery systems can benefit from using semaglutide.

Initially used to treat type 2 diabetes, semaglutide now also helps to treat obesity.

People using the jab can lose up to 20% of their body weight due to the drug suppressing the hunger hormone, meaning you feel full for longer and eat less.

During the study, the team of researchers analysed the health of 72 people, all of whom had type 1 diabetes.

A total of 36% of the participants using semaglutide lost up to 5% of their body weight and improved their blood glucose levels, the findings have identified.

First author Dr Andrew Ahmann said: “Semaglutide helped more people reach their blood sugar and weight goals without decreasing blood sugar.”

Over the six-month trial, the participants on semaglutide lost an average of 18.5 pounds, the study has reported.
