Researchers at Victoria University reviewed evidence on the glymphatic system, a network involved in removing waste products from the brain.
This clean-up process is especially active during sleep.
That matters because waste build-up in the brain is linked with ageing, inflammation and neurodegenerative disease.
The review suggests exercise may support this system through several routes.
Physical activity can reduce blood pressure and vascular stiffness, both of which matter for healthy blood flow in the brain.
It can also reduce inflammation, improve neuron activity and support better sleep quality.
Deep sleep may be particularly important because slow wave activity is thought to help drive waste clearance.
That creates an interesting chain.

The researchers are not claiming to have found the perfect exercise prescription yet.

Exercise may protect the brain not only by improving blood sugar, blood pressure and heart health, but by helping it maintain its own housekeeping system.

Type 2 diabetes is already linked with higher risk of cognitive decline and dementia, partly through effects on blood vessels, inflammation and metabolism.
That makes movement a brain-health intervention as well as a glucose and weight intervention.
The practical message is not complicated.
Walking, cycling, swimming, resistance training or any activity that raises the heart rate may all help.
The best exercise is still the one you can keep doing.
But if you needed one more reason to move, this is it: your brain may need the workout as much as your body does.
