That matters because beta cells are unusually sensitive to oxidative stress.
They have to sense glucose, produce insulin and release it at the right time.
If their internal machinery becomes stressed, insulin production can become less reliable.
In animal models, researchers disrupted peroxisome function by targeting a gene needed for normal peroxisome activity.
The result was not simply less insulin.
It was more complicated.
The animals developed glucose intolerance early in life, meaning their bodies struggled to keep blood sugar under control.
Yet their beta cells released more insulin in response to sugar.
That sounds contradictory, but it makes the finding more interesting.
More insulin does not automatically mean better glucose control if the insulin itself is damaged or the beta cell is losing its mature identity.
