According to recent reports in the diabetes news, loss of hearing is a largely unrecognised complication of diabetes . Recent studies indicate that adults with diabetes face approximately twice as much risk of impaired hearing as those without the condition.
A scientist who lead the study, Dr. Bainbridge, was reported as commenting: "We found that hearing loss was much more common in people with diabetes than people without the disease. The hearing loss we detected did not seem to be caused by other factors such as exposure to loud noises, certain medicines and smoking ."
The glean their findings, the team analysed results of a national hearing survey involving some 5,000 US adults. Ear and hearing damage is one of the lesser-known complications of diabetes.
Diabetes affects millions of people throughout the world. It is such a complex condition that constant new discoveries are being made about how it influences the body. Effectively managing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes by keeping blood sugar stable lowers the risk of complications.
