According to international news, soaring rates of diabetes in the UK are being directly linked to unhealthy living. Medical experts have linked the rise in diabetes to higher levels of obesity, itself caused by eating unhealthily and failing to exercise regularly.
According to the study, reported on widely in the diabetes news, newly diagnosed people with diabetes leaped 74 per cent between 1997 and 2003. This equals annual increases of 5 per cent.
According to the researchers, the majority of new cases were type 2 diabetes, often linked to being obese or overweight, or eating a poor diet .
The shadow health minister, Anne Milton, was reported as commenting: "We need to see proactive policies which look to reduce obesity rather than policies that simply treat the effects of it."
