News presenter happy with insulin pump

A recent article in the Daily Mail indicates that Sky TV news presenter Steve Dixon is extremely happy with his new Accu-Chek spirit insulin pump . Steve was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of seventeen. Steve tests his blood sugar levels daily, injecting with insulin up to six times every day.

Before starting on the pump, Steve found that his energy levels fluctuated considerably – tricky when his job is so demanding. Steve, 35, was reported in the article as saying: "I went through a phase of very low blood sugar at night. There were occasions when I woke up knowing something was wrong, but I couldn't quite work out what. It's like still being half asleep. I couldn't even remember where I was. So I'd stumble around my flat for a while and the first thing I really knew about it was when I "came to" sitting on the floor clutching a bottle of Lucozade. It could be terrifying."

However, his new insulin pump is making all the difference. He reportedly said of the pump: "It's made a massive difference to my quality of life. At last I feel as if I have control over my diabetes, rather than it controlling me. I still have to test my blood sugar levels, and watch the food I eat, but I can definitely live with that. Better still, my blood sugar levels are more stable; I no longer swing between the extreme highs and lows that used to make me feel sluggish and lethargic. I feel so much healthier."
