Type 2 diabetes mellitus can be strongly improved using surgery, including the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure. Medical treatment is usually attempted first, but the surgery could be an effective treatment option for people with diabetes .
Patients that underwent the surgery were examined, and increased insulin activity was reported including the regeneration of insulin cells. A research group based in China studied the procedure in ratss, and developed an evidence-based hypothesis to explain the Roux-en-Y affect on diabetes mellitus .
The study, which will be published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, was conducted by experts at the Institute of Basic Medical Anatomy National Key Disciplines at the Southern Medical University.
Currently this type of diabetes surgery is prescribed in small quantities on the National Health Service, but only under exceptional circumstances.
