iBGStar

iBGStar is the first blood glucose meter to integrate blood glucose testing with a smartphone. From Sanofi, the iBGStar is compatible with iPhone.

This blood glucose meter takes blood glucose monitoring to the next level, allowing you to manage your diabetes any time, anywhere.

iBGStar and iOS

The iBGStar is compatible with Apple’s iPhone and the iPod Touch, allowing you to easily view and analyse results on the go and enabling you to use your iPhone or iPod Touch as your blood glucose diary.

The only requirement of the smartphone is that it must be running at least iOS5.

The iBGStar is not compatible with Android or smartphones running iOS4 or earlier operating systems.

Accurate and convenient

The iBGStar is an accurate meter that gives plasma equivalent readings, requiring only a small droplet of blood (0.5 microlitres).

The meter requires no battery changes and is instead recharged similarly to a phone.

The iBGStar uses BGStar test strips which require no coding.

One of the smallest blood glucose meters

The iBGStar is one of the very smallest blood glucose meters on the market, measuring less than 6cm long and less than 3cm wide.

The style of the iBGStar matches that of an iPhone or iPod Touch.

You could easily be forgiven for not having any idea that it’s actually a blood glucose meter that you’re plugging into your phone.

iBGStar Diabetes Manager App

The iBGStar’s app can be downloaded from the Apple App store and just needs syncing with iTunes to get it up and running.

The software application that you download to your iPhone or iPod Touch is called Diabetes Manager App. This is a free app and gives a variety of log tables, graphs, averages (including custom averages) and standard deviations.

The iBGStar from Sanofi Aventis is somewhat unique because it plugs directly into an iPhone or iPod Touch.

The iBGStar is one of the smallest blood glucose meters available. As you can see, it’s a tiny meter. You can do a test with the meter attached to the iPhone or iPod or with it unattached. If it’s unattached it will download automatically the readings, the next time it’s plugged into your iPhone.

The blood glucose test strips here only require a small amount of blood. The finger pricking device has variable test setting depending on how thick the skin on your fingers is.

I’ll just take a sample of blood. There should be enough for the strip. We wait a few seconds and the meter will produce the reading. We get 10.3. It’s a little on the high side for me.

The beauty of the machine is that you can add in how much carbohydrate you’ve had. Let’s say we’re about to have 40 grams of carbohydrate and for that we’ll have 5 units of insulin. You can change which type, whether it’s long acting, pre-mixed or rapid acting insulin. We’ll say rapid acting here. And there’s a chance to add a note. That will be all noted in the diary now.

The iBGStar allows us to see a variety of trends. You can see a scatter plot of your readings over the last number of days. You have a diary which has all your results at different times of the day in tabular form.

The next feature to show is the share functionality. You can actually email yourself, or your doctor, with the results you have. We’ll compose an email with our various readings. You can set the number of days for which it pulls in the data from. It even includes a CSV file which means you can actually open your readings up in a spreadsheet such as Excel.

The iBGStar is a great new meter. It’s terrific when you’re out on the go because you can do your test and you can view any readings, looking back over past logs. It’s got the all important cool factor that many of us are looking for as well.

Each time the meter is connected and the Diabetes Manager App is accessed, the iBGStar syncs with your iPhone or iPod Touch and automatically transfers any new readings to the Diabetes Manager App’s log of test readings.
