Shocking new US diabetes figure

A new study by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) combined with the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has put a shocking new figure on the incidence of diabetes amongst Americans. According to the study, over 73 million Americans either have the disease or the precursors of the disease.
The findings leave no doubt that the disease is of epidemic proportions, and growing at an alarming rate . The head author of the study reportedly said: “Despite the fact that we now know how to prevent type 2 diabetes in many cases – through lifestyle changes that include weight loss and increased physical activity – we continue to see this disease climb.”
The research examined fewer than 5,000 individuals, and came up with a set of conclusions. One finding in particular has alarming implications for the future of the disease in the US. 26 per cent of Americans were found to have impaired fasting glucose. Many of these IFG sufferers are unaware of their condition.
An expert from the American Diabetes Association highlighted the need for prevention and awareness, saying: “Obviously, we aren’t doing enough to convince people they need to make changes in their lives.
Diabetes is a chronic and often debilitating disease that can cut short your life . The fact that we know how to prevent type 2 diabetes and we’re still seeing this kind of increase is devastating.”
