The furore over Avandia has been intensified even further with American Diabetes Association encouragement for patients taking this type of medication to discuss the situation with their physician, and evaluate the risks and benefits . However, the charity made it clear that on no account should diabetics stop taking medication.
The news broke several weeks ago, when the New England Journal of Medicine published a study based on meta-analysis that indicated a greatly increased risk of heart disease and death through cardiovascular disease due to Avandia, a blockbuster Glaxo diabetic drug.
The ADA is the leading voluntary health organisatio, pledged to support all aspects of diabetes advocacy, information and research. The association aim to eventually cure diabetes, and focus on prevention of the disease and improved healthcare.
