Diabetes, usually managed by diet, exercise, medication and insulin, or a combination of all four, also responds well to some herbal treatments. Herbs used to complement medication in order to lower blood sugar levels can lessen side effects and prove effective, in some cases.
Plants have been used to treat diabetes for many years and in many different areas of the world. The latest to receive international attention is the plantain root (Musa Paradisiaca) and the climbing ivy gourd (Coccinia Indica.) Reports on the two were published in the African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines .
Plantain is widely used as a food, but the root has been used before to combat diarrhoea, dysentery and other internal damage. Climbing Ivy Gourd is widely spread throughout India, and the antioxidant effects of the roots and leaves are highly regarded.
The researchers concluded that both plants have a role to play in diabetes treatment and the lowering of blood sugar levels.
