Risk of diabetes death cut by cheap pill

Obese type 2 diabetics could significantly have their risk of death reduced by taking a cheap, common tablet usually employed to lower blood pressure . The drug, much cheaper than most medication for diabetes, could account for a significant reduction in diabetes-related deaths.
The conclusion was drawn following research by an international study team . Those patients who took Coversyl Plus were found to be just under 20 per cent less likely to suffer death due to heart-related illness.
The research may have an influence on heart disease caused by diabetes, and influence future type 2 diabetes treatment. Thousands of deaths could be prevented in the UK alone. The trial was global, encompassing some 11,000 people with diabetes.
The findings were published in the Lancet, and presented at the European Society of Cardiology annual congress. The researchers argue that putting all diabetics, whether at risk of hypertension or not, on the drug would have a significant influence on future diabetes health statistics.
