According to international diabetes news, China could be facing a diabetes epidemic, with a larger diabetes population than any other country in the world. A new report shows how the economic momentum of China is taking a huge toll on the health of the population, with type 2 diabetes rates soaring.
The report indicates that 92 million adults in China have diabetes, with a massive 150 million suffering from pre-diabetes . Diabetes is more common amongst the urban population, the report indicated. The study forced the International Diabetes Federation to rethink their estimate of 435 million people with diabetes by 2030.
The study was conducted by Dr. Jiang He of Tulane University, New Orleans. He reportedly commented: “These data really show diabetes has become a major epidemic in China. We basically need to make diabetes one of the top priorities for public health in China.”
Other diabetes experts pointed to the epidemic being similar to that which engulfed the USA in the last 20 years.
