Welsh peak challenge raises cash for type 1 diabetes

A group of parents with children who have type 1 diabetes have raised money to help raise support those with the condition by climbing the highest peak in south Wales.
The climbers raised £700 by scaling Pen-y-Fa, which is situated in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
The cash will be donated to Type-1-derful, a group that is supported by Diabetes UK Cymru.
The organisation hosts regular meetings for people with type 1 diabetes and their families in Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot.
Participants are always holding fundraising events and family day outs, which in the past have included trips to West Midlands Safari Park, a pool party at Afan Lido and a bouncy castle party in Neath.
Speaking to the Bridgend Today newspaper, Ceris Evans from North Cornelly, who took part in the challenge, said: “My daughter Heulyn was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last November when she was 11.
“At first, we were in shock and I had no idea how much our lives would change. Since then, Type-1-derful has been a lifeline to us in many ways.
“The group is always there for advice, listening to others’ experiences and to offer support when times are tough.”
Ms Evans said the group gives the children a “brilliant opportunity to meet and socialise with others who can relate to them, and understand the challenge of living with a lifelong condition”.
Nicola Oates from Pen-y-Fai, told the local newspaper she wanted to take part because her daughter Alys was diagnosed a year ago and the group has been “brilliant” since then in supporting her family.
She added: “I honestly don’t know how I would have coped without their support and so this was a way that I could give something back.”
