A small-scale study in America has found that obese Hispanic adolescents and young children who have standard blood glucose levels also often had higher markers for blood vessel inflammation, putting them at a greater risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease .
A research team at the Joslin Diabetes Centre studied just under 40 young Hispanic girls and boys. They found that the obese members of the group were already showing signs of insulin resistance, and higher levels of blood markers.
Head investigator Dr. Caballero reportedly commented: "They are already exhibiting problems with circulation. There is an inflammatory process going on in the vessels."
The study authors reportedly concluded: "We have found that overweight Hispanic children and adolescents have elevated markers of endothelial dysfunction and vascular inflammation closely related to excess body fat and increased insulin resistance."
