Two new diabetes initiatives are set to boost the scale and scope of diabetes research. An alliance between the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundatio, and Novo Nordisk focus around type 1 and type 2 diabetes respectively. The partnership between the three is not for profit, and will build upon previous research initiatives by the three parties. The study is also large-scale, with the three partners in the firm committing over 3.5 million Euros .
The type 1 program will provide grants for a range of different areas of research, with the aim of finding a cure . There will also be a focus on supporting research amongst young people – with a particular focus on obesity .
The president of EASD and EFSD, Mr. Ferannini, said: “We have a lot of diabetes expertise in Europen, but the level of funding of the research is inadequate. I hope this partnership between EASD, JDRF and Novo Nordisk will inspire both governments and industry to increase their contributions to basic research into diabetes.”
