Experts indicate that taking regular vitamin D throughout early childhood could help to protect against diabetes . Vitamin D supplements, the experts say, could guard against type 1 diabetes development.
Researchers found that those children who were given additional vitamin D were as much as 80 per cent less likely to develop the disease. The more regular the dose, the lower the likelihood of developing type 1 .
The research followed 12,000 children in Finland . The research team believe that the vitamin could work as an immuno-suppressant.
Diabetes UK, the leading UK diabetes charity that analysed the studies, indicated that the findings need further research.
