A research team at University College London Medical School recently investigated levels of C-reactive protein and how they influence the risk of type 2 diabetes .
C-reactive protein is a marker for inflammation in the blood and has previously been linked with increased risk of diabetes development. However, whether the protein actually causes type 2 diabetes was unknown.
Employing an analysis technique known as Mendelian randomizatio, UCL experts narrowed down other variables and found that C-reactive protein in the blood is not likely to cause diabetes to develop.
