According to a recent study at the Harvard Medical School in Bosto, older adults facing type 2 diabetes could be at a greater risk of facing mental decline in older age.
The study clearly links diabetes with mental decline and dementia. The report was published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, and indicate that the greater time period diabetes is developed increases the risk of cognitive decline.
The research team studied well over 10,000 subjects, the majority of whom were in their early 70s. The team pointed to risk mechanisms such as blood vessel damage, irregular insulin concentrations and further relationships between diabetes and mental functioning.
The future will see more detailed studies into how the disease affects the brain.
