A research team is looking for female volunteers with type 2 diabetes . Participants are being asked to eat a chocolate bar twice each day.
To be eligible for the study, volunteers must be post-menopausal and have type 2 diabetes . The participants will eat a super-strength chocolate bar twice every day for the next year.
The researchers are testing whether the flavonoids in chocolate have an impact on heart disease risk. Flavonoids are known as a natural anti-oxidant that can help to maintain the health of the body and protect it against disease .
The study, funded by diabetes charity Diabetes UK, is entering its final stages. Study co-ordinator Dr. Peter Curtis reportedly commented: “We are now approaching a really exciting phase of the study. Our first volunteers are about to return for their final visit to see if the markers of heart health – such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels – have changed. A successful outcome could be the first step in developing new ways to improve the lives of people at increased risk of heart disease.”
