Using a pedometer regularly can help to lower the risk of diabetes development by as much as half, according to recent research. Volunteers used the machines to walk for half an hour each day, and radically lowered their diabetes risk . The tests were carried out on subjects who already have a risk of diabetes .
Diabetes is a serious issue in the UK, with over 2.5 million people suffering from the condition. By 2025, experts believe, as many as four million Britons will have diabetes . Furthermore, some seven million have prediabetes, elevated blood sugar levels that increase the risk of type 2 diabetes . By intervening early, even with mild exercise, diabetes can be prevented.
Diabetes UK expert Dr. Iain Frame was reported as commenting: “By finding new ways to educate and motivate people with prediabetes we are aiming to stop the Type 2 diabetes epidemic in its tracks and prevent millions of people developing serious complications of the condition such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and amputation .”
