A 12-year-old girl with type 1 diabetes has been called “inspirational” due to her fundraising efforts for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
Pheobe Maddiso, who lives in North Swindo, inspired a recent performance by the Swindon Stagecoach Theatre Group – she has been a member for six years – from which over £3,500 was raised for the type 1 diabetes charity.
Ally Colto, South West regional fundraiser for JDRF, told the Swindon Advertiser: “It is amazing that these people have got together to do this for us. We are constantly trying to raise funds to help those with type 1 diabetes and we are grateful for all the support we receive.
“Not many people know that those who have type 1 diabetes are living with a life-threatening illness and it’s fantastic that Phoebe and everyone at Stagecoach have chosen to support us.”
The performance, called True Colours, raised more than £7,000 in total, with half given to the JDRF to support people with type 1 diabetes and their families.
Deputy Mayor Maureen Penny said: “I think it is wonderful to see someone dedicated to raising money for charity at such a young age. She is very inspirational.”
Pheobe was given a Pride of Swindon award earlier this year for her fundraising events. She is currently in the running to go to Washington DC next year as a representative for the JDRF.
Described by her mother, Michelle, as an “inspirational child”, Pheobe was blown away by the support given to the show.
Phoebe said: “I think it is incredible the amount of money we managed to raise for the foundation. I’m really proud of everyone who took part; the level of support has been absolutely fantastic.
“I’m the only member of Stagecoach who has type 1 diabetes and it feels amazing to be able to do something like this for such a good cause.”
