The glymphatic system helps clear waste products from the brain, especially during sleep.

When that system works poorly, damaging proteins and metabolic debris may build up.

That is one reason researchers are increasingly interested in how glymphatic function relates to dementia and cognitive decline.

A new review from Victoria University suggests exercise may be one way to support this clean-up process.

The evidence is not yet complete, but the biological logic is strong.

Exercise improves vascular function.

That matters because glymphatic clearance depends partly on healthy fluid movement and blood vessel dynamics.

Exercise can also reduce blood pressure, lower vascular stiffness and improve blood flow.

It can calm inflammation in the brain and alter norepinephrine, a chemical involved in arousal and stress.

Sleep may be the key link.

The glymphatic system is especially active during deep sleep, and regular exercise is one of the more reliable ways to improve sleep quality.

This is important because sleep often becomes harder with age, just as the brain’s need for repair and clean-up becomes more urgent.

For people with diabetes, the message is especially relevant.

Diabetes is linked with vascular disease, inflammation, sleep problems and higher dementia risk.

Exercise hits all of those pathways at once.

It improves insulin sensitivity, helps blood pressure, supports sleep and may now also help brain waste clearance.

The researchers still need to identify the best exercise type, dose and timing.

It may turn out that aerobic exercise, resistance training or a combination has different effects.

But this does not need to wait for the perfect trial before becoming useful.

Regular movement remains one of the most powerful tools for healthy ageing.
