Scientists in Montreal have recognised a specific gene that causes children to develop diabetes. The finding may eventually have a role to play in preventing the onset of the condition.
The new gene, which causes type 1 diabetes, has been code-named KIAA0350. Genetic prediction would allow doctors to reach diabetic patients early, at a crucial point before the beta cells have been entirely destroyed.
Diabetes in the UK is hitting crisis point, with NHS spending over £10 million a week on drugs for diabetics . The disease cost the healthcare service £562.5 million pounds last year.
The new genes were discovered using DNA microchips, and published in the journal Nature.
