Poor sleep is not the same biological problem at every age.
A new brain imaging study suggests the poorly slept young brain and the poorly slept older brain may look quite different.
Researchers analysed brain scans from more than 1,300 people across two large groups.
They focused on resting-state connectivity, which looks at how brain networks communicate when a person is not doing a task.
In college-age adults with poor sleep, the researchers found overconnection in regions involved in movement.
That may suggest the body is not fully winding down for sleep.
In older adults, the pattern shifted.

The same movement-related regions were under-connected, while regions involved in cognition showed abnormal overconnection.
The most striking finding was in older women with poor sleep.
They showed hyperconnectivity between the Default Mode Network and the Frontal Parietal Network.
The Default Mode Network is involved in internal thought and memory.
The Frontal Parietal Network supports attention and working memory.
Too much communication between these networks was linked with poorer memory performance.
It also resembles patterns seen in the preclinical stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
That does not mean poor sleep causes Alzheimer’s.
It also does not mean a bad night of sleep is damaging the brain in a permanent way.
The study cannot fully answer the chicken-and-egg question.
Brain network changes may contribute to poor sleep, or poor sleep may alter brain networks.
Both may be true.
But the findings underline why sleep matters for brain health.
They also suggest sleep interventions may need to be age-specific.
For younger adults, reducing arousal before bed may help.

That could mean journalling, reducing screen stimulation or creating a stronger wind-down routine.
For older adults, the mechanisms may be more complex.
The issue may be less about simple pre-bed restlessness and more about changes in brain network regulation.
The practical message is not glamorous, but it is important.
Persistent sleep problems should not be brushed off as normal ageing.
Sleep is part of brain health, and when it breaks down, the brain may show it.
